Michelle Niziol: the companion episode on BEYONDai
The full account lives here: Read the full record on BEYONDai
Fired in week one of The Apprentice as the first task's project manager, Michelle Niziol turned rejection into her sharpest business lesson, never be complacent, and built the seven-company property and finance group IMS Property Group on the teenage trauma of a family home nearly repossessed when she was 17. The episode's claim is that rejection is fuel: therapy broke her addiction to setting up businesses, and focusing on the companies she has, while lifting other women through The Empowering Entrepreneur, lets her be a present mother and a formidable businesswoman at the same time.
Our companion episode on BEYONDai takes Michelle Niziol's conversation and produces it into a single cut, entity by entity: the thesis stated, and every subject given its own point of view. This is what the episode knits together.

Episode highlights transcript
Michelle Niziol
Aleksandra King: … I was just like, "I can't." I went home and spoke to my
Aleksandra King: husband and I said, "I can't do this.
Aleksandra King: Like, I can't do it." And he said, "You are doing it because-
Aleksandra King: Mm
Aleksandra King: … literally, like, you … I'm not gonna put up with you-
Aleksandra King: going, "I could have got on the show. I could have got on the show." But yeah,
Aleksandra King: I nearly didn't do it because of that.
Aleksandra King: What feelings did you experience when you got on the show?
Michelle Niziol: It was quite emotional.
Michelle Niziol: You know, I was made a project manager on the first task.
Aleksandra King: You were indeed.
Michelle Niziol: Yeah, that's how I got fired.
Michelle Niziol: Um, but-
Aleksandra King: Never be project manager on the first-
Michelle Niziol: No, never be project manager- Never … on the first time.
Michelle Niziol: But- Yeah … you know, the… I was, I was super emotional that day.
Michelle Niziol: Yeah.
Michelle Niziol: So we had a wake-up call at, like, 3:00 AM.
Michelle Niziol: Yeah.
Michelle Niziol: And I'd literally not slept the night before.
Michelle Niziol: Mm-hmm.
Michelle Niziol: And I remember waking up, going into the bathroom, doing my makeup,
Michelle Niziol: and, um, thinking, "What have I let myself in for," you know?
Michelle Niziol: Yeah.
Michelle Niziol: Like, seriously.
Aleksandra King: Overwhelming, isn't it?
Michelle Niziol: Overwhelming, yeah.
Michelle Niziol: The whole pro- I mean, the whole process is set up to absolutely test you, and I
Michelle Niziol: think, again, what people don't see is we make silly mistakes on that show because
Michelle Niziol: you are literally pushed to your limits.
Aleksandra King: Well, I think we make silly mistakes on the show, but the show
Aleksandra King: is also, it's a TV production- Yeah … I think which there is business within that,
Aleksandra King: but it's also there for entertainment.
In their own words
Michelle Niziol: I've never wanted to be a celebrity.
Michelle Niziol: Mm. I've got zero interest in it.
Michelle Niziol: I think when you go on a show like that, you do attract a lot of media
Michelle Niziol: attention, but that's not why I did it.
Michelle Niziol: I did it for the experience, whereas I think there were some people on
Michelle Niziol: the show that obviously went in
Aleksandra King: for different reasons.
Aleksandra King: You do think some people wanted to go in for celebrity?
Aleksandra King: And do you think they were chosen and selected with that in mind?
Aleksandra King: Uh- That these are the celebrity people- Still- … these are the businesspeople
Aleksandra King: are
Michelle Niziol: still-
Aleksandra King: Did you think so?
Aleksandra King: Are
Michelle Niziol: still smart businesspeople.
Michelle Niziol: Mm. I think every… And I think that's another thing that people
Michelle Niziol: don't understand about the show.
Michelle Niziol: Every single candidate- Mm … you would have employed in your business, you know?
Aleksandra King: That's right.
Aleksandra King: You know, I, I agree with this, which is why I wanted this platform
Aleksandra King: as well, because- It's true.
Aleksandra King: Every single person that was there had something.
Michelle Niziol: Yeah.
Aleksandra King: There was something to them.
Aleksandra King: Either they were incred- actually, most were good at sales, let's be clear.
Aleksandra King: Yeah.
Aleksandra King: Or everyone could sell.
Aleksandra King: You wouldn't, you wouldn't make it on the show if you can't sell.
Aleksandra King: No.
Aleksandra King: Um, but they all had some sort of business acumen, and some were crazier than others.
Aleksandra King: Some were more f- you know, professional, let's say.
Aleksandra King: Yeah.
Aleksandra King: Some were a little bit more out there, but they all had something.
Michelle Niziol: The crazy thing for me to watch was i- in the house everybody's
Michelle Niziol: your mate, and then when it's filming, we're ruthless- Yeah … with each other.
Michelle Niziol: Yeah.
Michelle Niziol: And, and the switch is immediate, and I found that- Mm
Michelle Niziol: brilliant because actually that's what I'm like in my business life is-
Aleksandra King: Right
Aleksandra King: … in business you have to turn it on sometimes and
Aleksandra King: actually be someone that you're probably not quite naturally.
In their own words
Michelle Niziol: would have married business Michelle.
Michelle Niziol: You know?
Michelle Niziol: Yeah.
Michelle Niziol: He would have married Shelly.
Michelle Niziol: And I think that that, that was the same dynamics on the show was when
Michelle Niziol: we're in the house we're all friends, we're all getting on, we're all
Michelle Niziol: having a laugh- Do you know what?
Michelle Niziol: … a good time with each other.
Aleksandra King: I have a slightly different take on that, in that I
Aleksandra King: am, I treat, I'm very much like my business, my clients, you know, whoever
Aleksandra King: I'm working with, even professionally when I was working for people and
Aleksandra King: now that I have my own business, I treat everyone in a similar way.
Aleksandra King: I, I do have this thing where it's, it's all family to me, and when someone's
Aleksandra King: close to me, the clients are close to me, I bring them into my network.
Aleksandra King: And I, I did find that odd, the turning, but I kind of expected it, let's say- Yeah
Aleksandra King: … from, from some of the candidates.
Aleksandra King: It's not necessarily what I would do, though.
Michelle Niziol: Yeah.
Michelle Niziol: I mean, I don't mean that, um, I'm still a really nice person-
Aleksandra King: Mm
Aleksandra King: … at work, it's just I'm a lot, uh, fiercer I would say.
Aleksandra King: Yeah, okay.
Aleksandra King: That's not necessarily with the clients.
Aleksandra King: Yeah.
Aleksandra King: It's, it's with, I think if you show any sign of weakness,
Aleksandra King: say, with, uh- Well, if you
Aleksandra King: show it to the candidates- … your
Aleksandra King: team … you're finished.
Michelle Niziol: Yeah, exactly.
Michelle Niziol: And I think that- Yeah … you know- Yeah.
Michelle Niziol: Totally … sadly I, I've had to have a different type- Yeah … of facade-
Michelle Niziol: Yeah … where I'm a absolute real softie
Michelle Niziol: at heart, you know?
In their own words
Michelle Niziol: In business you have to make decisions- Yeah … that not everybody likes.
Michelle Niziol: So that, that's sort of what I mean.
Michelle Niziol: Um, so clients get to know almost Shelly- And actually in the business world, you
Michelle Niziol: know, because otherwise people are coming after your business, people are coming
Michelle Niziol: after- Yeah … your clients, you know.
Michelle Niziol: Um, and, and sadly I've had to behave in, in a way where you're
Michelle Niziol: very clear, you're very direct-
Aleksandra King: Yes
Aleksandra King: … um, so that people can't misunderstand or misinterpret what you're
Aleksandra King: saying or where you're coming from.
Aleksandra King: Whereas at home I'm not like that at all.
Aleksandra King: Mm. I'm all, I'm super fun and relaxed.
Aleksandra King: Of course.
Aleksandra King: And, and also when you're working with clients, a lot of
Aleksandra King: these relationships last years.
Aleksandra King: Hopefully that's the goal, you know.
Aleksandra King: Yeah 5, 6, 7, 8, 10 years.
Aleksandra King: Um, and they get to know you.
Michelle Niziol: The majority of my clients have been with me 20 years-
Aleksandra King: Yeah
Michelle Niziol: you know, which is crazy.
Aleksandra King: Awesome.
Michelle Niziol: Um, been with me through my journey, and I think
Michelle Niziol: they've loved watching my journey.
Michelle Niziol: I think that they're super proud that they've been a part of that, you know.
Michelle Niziol: And also I think the comments that I get quite a lot is it hasn't gone
Michelle Niziol: to my head, and I'm super grounded.
Michelle Niziol: No, yeah.
Michelle Niziol: And,
Aleksandra King: you know- You are grounded
Aleksandra King: … you know- Yeah … w- whether, you know, even the clients
Aleksandra King: where I might be doing like a 25 grand mortgage, I treat them exactly
Aleksandra King: the same than a client where I'm doing a 5 million pound mortgage.
Michelle Niziol
Aleksandra King: ' Cause obviously you've gotta make up a story as to where,
Aleksandra King: why you're gonna go away for three months and no one's gonna see you.
Aleksandra King: So, um, obviously, I, I'd called the members of my team and, um, you know,
Aleksandra King: they, they were shocked, but obviously really chuffed that I'd done it.
Aleksandra King: And then I, I couldn't see anyone for a couple of days.
Aleksandra King: So like, literally I went home, spent a couple of days at home just-
Aleksandra King: Yeah … trying to, like, process.
Aleksandra King: Process.
Michelle Niziol: And then I booked a holiday to Disney World straight away.
Aleksandra King: What a good idea.
Michelle Niziol: Yeah.
Michelle Niziol: So-
Aleksandra King: That's it.
Michelle Niziol: Yeah.
Michelle Niziol: That was it.
Michelle Niziol: I was like-
Aleksandra King: Distraction
Aleksandra King: … yeah, absolutely.
Aleksandra King: Well,
Aleksandra King: that's a tactic.
Aleksandra King: I mean, instead of sitting there sort of letting things get into
Aleksandra King: your head too much and sort of brr-
Michelle Niziol: Yeah
Michelle Niziol: … you know, off you go to Disney World.
Michelle Niziol: Yeah.
Michelle Niziol: And actually the, um, the producers were there, you know, helping me pack my stuff-
Aleksandra King: Mm-hmm
Aleksandra King: … um, when I left the show, and they said something,
Aleksandra King: um, that has always stayed with me.
Aleksandra King: Right.
Aleksandra King: They said, "Michelle, you never appreciate what you've achieved so far
Aleksandra King: in life." Um, and it was after that that I got a therapist for the first time.
Aleksandra King: Even if I'd have won, I think it would've been the same.
Aleksandra King: Mm. You know, I've done it.
Aleksandra King: I've achieved it.
Aleksandra King: Let's move on.
Aleksandra King: So for ages, for probably a couple of years, I couldn't even talk about
Aleksandra King: it.
Aleksandra King: Yeah.
Michelle Niziol: Um-
Aleksandra King: Same, actually.
Michelle Niziol: Really?
Aleksandra King: I found it quite hard, yeah.
The thesis
Michelle Niziol: not be project manager week one." So I got voted to be project manager.
Aleksandra King: Yeah, you, you did.
Michelle Niziol: And, um, you know-
Aleksandra King: You did
Aleksandra King: … I didn't ask for it.
Aleksandra King: Yeah.
Aleksandra King: And actually spent hours deliberating.
Aleksandra King: I was like, "No, no, no, no,
Aleksandra King: no." I think it was a tactic- Yeah … um, because no one
Aleksandra King: really wanted to be project manager.
Aleksandra King: It was very brave of you.
Michelle Niziol: Yeah.
Aleksandra King: I suppose that's a good thing to-
Michelle Niziol: Well, do you know what I thought?
Michelle Niziol: Yeah.
Michelle Niziol: So in the end, I gave in because I was like, do you know what?
Michelle Niziol: If I am gonna go out of this process, I'm gonna go out leading from
Michelle Niziol: the front, 'cause I am a leader.
Michelle Niziol: Yeah.
Michelle Niziol: I'm a natural leader.
Michelle Niziol: And I thought, where I would have regretted the- Mm … the
Michelle Niziol: process is if I'd got kicked out-
Aleksandra King: Mm
Aleksandra King: … and just been hiding around in the background.
Aleksandra King: Like, I'm not a background person.
Aleksandra King: Oh, no, no.
Aleksandra King: No, you definitely- So- No
Aleksandra King: … you know, for me, it was
Aleksandra King: like-
Michelle Niziol: Yeah, just sort of hanging around, yeah … yeah,
Michelle Niziol: hanging around, not doing anything.
Michelle Niziol: No.
Michelle Niziol: And, and hiding in the, in the background until, like, week,
Michelle Niziol: you know, the end of the process.
Michelle Niziol: Oh,
Aleksandra King: terrible, yeah.
Aleksandra King: Terrible.
Aleksandra King: You
Michelle Niziol: know?
Michelle Niziol: Yeah.
Michelle Niziol: That's not my style.
Michelle Niziol: So I was like, do you know what?
Michelle Niziol: I'm, if I'm, if I'm gonna go- Yeah … and I'm gonna be fired, I'm gonna be project
Michelle Niziol: manager, 'cause that's the way to go out.
Aleksandra King: Yeah.
Aleksandra King: So now that you've had your therapy, what has The Apprentice
Aleksandra King: taught you about yourself?
Michelle Niziol: T- it taught me to slow down.
Michelle Niziol: Right.
Michelle Niziol: So I was on the verge… The reason I got a therapist was I was on the
Michelle Niziol: verge of setting up another business, which would've been my eighth company.
In their own words
Michelle Niziol: off that treadmill and not setting up any more businesses and focusing
Michelle Niziol: on the businesses that I've got, I think I've become more successful.
Michelle Niziol: So let's…
Aleksandra King: What businesses do you have?
Aleksandra King: Let's list them.
Aleksandra King: So.
Michelle Niziol: Yeah.
Michelle Niziol: So I've got a, um, estate agency.
Aleksandra King: Right.
Michelle Niziol: A letting agency.
Michelle Niziol: Right.
Michelle Niziol: Um, a commercial mortgage brokerage, a residential mortgage brokerage,
Michelle Niziol: an insurance brokerage- … and then I've got a, um, portfolio, so property
Michelle Niziol: portfolio building company where, you know, I would build, buy you 10 houses
Michelle Niziol: and completely manage them for you.
Aleksandra King: That's insane.
Aleksandra King: That's just crazy.
Aleksandra King: So what qualities, what essential qualities do you need to possess-
Aleksandra King: To be able to run a business successfully, do you think?
Michelle Niziol: I think number one is the passion for it.
Michelle Niziol: So you can see, you know, with my businesses it's the passion to get
Michelle Niziol: you to own your own home, 'cause that's what made me feel safe- Yeah
Michelle Niziol: and I know it'll make you feel safe.
Michelle Niziol: Um, but so, so having the passion for it.
Michelle Niziol: There's absolutely no point- Yeah … in running a business-
Aleksandra King: Drives you, the energy
Aleksandra King: … unless you are passionate about it, because
Aleksandra King: there's gonna be so many down times.
Aleksandra King: Yeah.
Aleksandra King: So as long as you've got that, you know, the passion for what you're doing, whether
Aleksandra King: it's, you know, hairdressing or makeup artist or photography, if you love it
Aleksandra King: and you're willing to put your all into it, then you're gonna be successful.
In their own words
Michelle Niziol: I was, um, I had, like, one job before I set up my own businesses-
Michelle Niziol: Mm-hmm … and that was in a completely male-dominated industry.
Aleksandra King: What was it?
Aleksandra King: What industry?
Aleksandra King: It
Michelle Niziol: was a roofing company.
Michelle Niziol: And I'm s- they're still my family to this day.
Michelle Niziol: Okay.
Michelle Niziol: So actually, they held me in such high regard that my journey into
Michelle Niziol: entrepreneurialism was actually really good, because I was a
Michelle Niziol: well-respected, very young female.
Michelle Niziol: Um, I was almost, like, the most respected in that business- Mm
Michelle Niziol: at such a young age.
Michelle Niziol: That gave me a bit of a false, um, economy when it came to business.
Michelle Niziol: So when I moved into running my own business, apart from people would walk
Michelle Niziol: into my office, especially older men-
Aleksandra King: Yeah
Aleksandra King: … and not take me seriously.
Aleksandra King: Oh, really?
Michelle Niziol: Initially.
Michelle Niziol: Initially.
Michelle Niziol: How
Aleksandra King: did you know they weren't taking you seriously?
Michelle Niziol: Just the questions that they'd ask, and they'd almost- Like
Aleksandra King: what?
Aleksandra King: Like just silly things?
Michelle Niziol: Just, just testing your knowledge.
Michelle Niziol: So-
Aleksandra King: Okay, they tested you … I've had a
Aleksandra King: … Yeah.
Aleksandra King: Mm-hmm.
Aleksandra King: I've had a lot of men over the years that have basically gone,
Aleksandra King: "You need to prove that you know what you're talking about." Yeah.
Aleksandra King: But the minute then you know what you're talking about- That's right
Aleksandra King: and knowledge is power, then that all seemed to drop.
In their own words
Michelle Niziol: I'm a formidable business person.
Aleksandra King: Yeah.
Aleksandra King: I had- And
Michelle Niziol: don't ever underestimate me.
Michelle Niziol: That's
Aleksandra King: it.
Aleksandra King: You
Michelle Niziol: know?
Michelle Niziol: And, um-
Aleksandra King: That's it.
Aleksandra King: I had a similar situation in the IT industry-
Michelle Niziol: Yeah
Michelle Niziol: … where I started off in telecommunications and billing
Michelle Niziol: and analysis and all these things, and I walked into the office and it
Michelle Niziol: was literally 99% male consultants.
Michelle Niziol: And, um, I walk in there and, uh, and it's like, "Well, you don't look like an IT
Michelle Niziol: person. You don't talk like an IT person. What do you know about IT?" And that's
Michelle Niziol: when also the serious mode comes in.
Michelle Niziol: I say, "Right, I'll show you."
Michelle Niziol: Yeah.
Michelle Niziol: " I'll show you." Yeah.
Michelle Niziol: And then, and then they, they quickly learn, don't they-
Michelle Niziol: Mm … who they're dealing with.
Michelle Niziol: I don't really get upset about it- No … if it's a male or a woman, 'cause I think
Michelle Niziol: anyone's gonna have their backup if you're asking them, you know, if you're c- trying
Michelle Niziol: to convince them to buy a car, whatever.
Michelle Niziol: Yeah.
Michelle Niziol: "Oh, I don't w- why would I want that car?" It, it's the same thing.
Michelle Niziol: I… Maybe I think women do get it a little bit hard, especially- Yeah
Michelle Niziol: in male-dominated industries, like, you know, we talk about
Michelle Niziol: roofing, construction- Yeah
Michelle Niziol: … IT.
Michelle Niziol: That's fair.
Michelle Niziol: Um, you have to work a little bit harder maybe.
Michelle Niziol: Yeah.
Michelle Niziol: I think less now, because obviously we're a bit more out there.
Aleksandra King: Mm.
Michelle Niziol: Um, and people take, are taking us a bit more seriously.
Michelle Niziol: But I've always loved it.
Michelle Niziol: I've always loved- Mm.
Michelle Niziol: I've always taken advantage of being the only female in the room, you know?
In their own words
Michelle Niziol: Yeah, I mean, b- running my own business, I've never really
Michelle Niziol: experienced that in a, a professional capacity- Right … 'cause I've,
Michelle Niziol: you know, had pretty much one job.
Michelle Niziol: And to be fair, he overpaid me.
Michelle Niziol: I wasn't, I, he was paying me way t- more money than I was
Michelle Niziol: actually worth at the time.
Michelle Niziol: Uh-huh.
Michelle Niziol: So personally, I've not actually experienced it, but obviously from
Michelle Niziol: what I've seen and heard in the press, um, I don't agree with it.
Michelle Niziol: You know, it's that women, you know, we shouldn't be seen as women and men.
Michelle Niziol: We should be seen as, you know, can you do the job?
Michelle Niziol: Can you deliver?
Michelle Niziol: Yeah.
Michelle Niziol: Irrelevant of who you are and-
Aleksandra King: I think women, you know, I've seen this in consulting, in the
Aleksandra King: corporate world of consulting, you know, there's a floor full of consultants,
Aleksandra King: and the men are earning basically double what the women are earning.
Aleksandra King: Same job, same everything.
Aleksandra King: And I think- Looking into it a bit more, I'm quite analytical about these things,
Aleksandra King: and I'm, I've noticed that women aren't asking- Mm … for as much money as men.
Aleksandra King: Men are more confident even though some of them might have even less
Aleksandra King: skills, let's say, or even the same.
Michelle Niziol: Yep.
Aleksandra King: Even the same.
Aleksandra King: Um, women aren't asking for as much as men because they feel, "Ooh, I'm not
Aleksandra King: quite ready." They're perfectionists.
Aleksandra King: They're kind of thinking, you know- Mm … "I need to get into the job, then
Aleksandra King: I'll ask for more," whereas men are more, a little bit more gutsy in that way,
Aleksandra King: and I think women need to stop that-
Michelle Niziol: Yeah
Michelle Niziol: … and ask high, and you'll be surprised you get it.
The Empowering Entrepreneur
Michelle Niziol: And I love meeting… I mean, I have a, the Empowering Entrepreneur, where
Michelle Niziol: I do networking- Mm-hmm … um, for businesswomen, and that is purely to
Michelle Niziol: get in a room with like-minded women like myself, so you can all sort of,
Michelle Niziol: you know, um, help each other, lift each other up, support each other.
Aleksandra King: And I think these kind of podcasts and getting out there
Aleksandra King: and talking to women and normalizing- Mm … a confident woman, you know, a-
Aleksandra King: and seeing that as a very, very good thing is something that should be continuing.
Michelle Niziol: Yeah.
Michelle Niziol: Absolutely.
Michelle Niziol: And this is why I'm on a bit of a mission and a-
Aleksandra King: Yeah
Aleksandra King: … you know, doing loads of PR and media at the moment.
Aleksandra King: One, because, you know, I've got nothing to prove.
Aleksandra King: Two, I think by sharing my story, particularly around, you know, working
Aleksandra King: with therapists and psychologists, that there should be no stigma attached to it.
Aleksandra King: No.
Aleksandra King: Yeah.
Aleksandra King: And actually it's only gonna benefit yourself.
Aleksandra King: And for any women out there that, you know, are working mums, you
Aleksandra King: know, um, whether they're an employee or running their own business,
Aleksandra King: that actually you can do it.
Aleksandra King: You can, you know, still be present if you work, if you work on it- Yeah,
Aleksandra King: you definitely can
Aleksandra King: … and have that work-life balance- Yeah … but still
Aleksandra King: be super successful at the same time.
Aleksandra King: So you can be a mum and still run businesses and not… One
Aleksandra King: of those always sort of above the other at some point in time.
In their own words
Michelle Niziol: I was shocked to go out in week one, but at the same
Michelle Niziol: time, I've made the most of it.
Aleksandra King: Right.
Aleksandra King: So
Michelle Niziol: let's
Aleksandra King: go back a little bit.
Aleksandra King: Mm. Why did you apply in the first place?
Michelle Niziol: I've, I've ran businesses since my early 20s, and,
Michelle Niziol: you know, you could probably relate to this, it's really lonely, and
Michelle Niziol: I was a female running businesses.
Michelle Niziol: Mm-hmm.
Michelle Niziol: So there wasn't, back then, I'm… I, I certainly wasn't the only
Michelle Niziol: female entrepreneur, but there wasn't many of us, certainly where I live-
Aleksandra King: Yeah
Aleksandra King: … in quite a small market town.
Aleksandra King: So I did it because I was lonely, you know- Mm … because I really wanted to
Aleksandra King: mix with other entrepreneurs and gauge myself against, you know, how am I doing?
Aleksandra King: Because I, you know, from a very early age, I've been the boss.
Aleksandra King: Right.
Michelle Niziol: So it's like, how, how can you compare yourself against
Michelle Niziol: other business owners where you go on, put yourself through the biggest TV
Michelle Niziol: show, you know, in the country, and see… So for me, it was a challenge.
Michelle Niziol: Like, could I actually get on the show, and then how could I do on the show?
Aleksandra King: So besides feeling that, you know, you were a bit different,
Aleksandra King: what in your personality really, just be honest, gave you the courage to do this?
