Derrick McManus
Derrick McManus is a former South Australian Police STAR Group officer. On 3 May 1994, during a high-risk arrest at Nuriootpa in the Barossa Valley, he was shot 14 times and survived about three hours on the ground before his team could carry him out; in his telling, the doctor put him 30 seconds from death, and the siege ran 41 hours in all, the longest ever in Australia. He returned to policing fully operational, back to the same unit, and remained a police officer until 2018.
He is the founder of Human Durability, where he teaches sustained optimal performance, the philosophy this episode walks through: mind management under pressure, preparation done years before it is needed, and durability built deliberately rather than a peak forced unsustainably.
